Arganil: A Hidden Jewel

Town Hall Arganil Central Portugal

Arganil is located in the Coimbra region, an area known for its green nature and traditional Portuguese culture. The charming town is surrounded by greenery and offers a variety of adventurous and relaxing activities. Whether you enjoy hiking, swimming in one of its rivers, or exploring the local cuisine, Arganil has something for everyone.

In Arganil you will find chapel São Pedro from the 12th century, Roman excavations but also a tiny war museum, a park full of mosaic works and, of course, restaurants and terraces. Right around Arganil alone you will find 4 lovely little river beaches, the prais fluviais. At one of these spots on the Rio Alva, dogs are allowed all year round. I regularly go swimming here myself in the summer and with the dogs in the water.

Its central location also makes it an excellent base for exploring surrounding attractions.

Special Sights in Arganil Central Portugal

Fraga da Pena

This beautiful waterfall, located in the Serra do Açor nature reserve is not to be missed. The crystal-clear water flows down a rock face 20 meters below and offers an idyllic place to relax. You can enjoy hiking here; there is a trail all the way up along the falls to the smaller waterfalls and hidden lakes behind. Fraga da Pena is an oasis of tranquility where you can relax completely in the impressive and rugged nature.

Piódão

Just a short drive from Arganil is Piódão, one of the most beautiful historic villages in Portugal. Its houses are built of slate and form a picturesque setting against the green backdrop of the mountains. This authentic village is known for its narrow streets, traditional architecture and warm hospitality. Visitors can sample local specialties in the small eateries, or visit Piódão’s museum to learn more about the village’s history and culture. Piódão is a magical place especially at sunset, when the lights of the houses light up against the dark hills. Nice touch: all the window frames and doors are painted the same color blue.

Serra do Açor and Serra da Estrela

The Serra do Açor and Serra da Estrela are two impressive mountain ranges near Arganil. Although they are often mentioned in the same breath, they are completely different. Arganil lies at the foot of Serra do Açor. For this reason, Bed and Breakfast Casa Traca is affiliated with NaturalPT, Serra do Açor Protected Landscape as a nature cottage.

Serra do Açor:

Known for its unspoiled nature and quiet hiking trails. Here you will find hidden gems such as traditional villages and dense forests. The area is a paradise for hikers who like to discover unspoiled trails away from the tourist crowds. Serra do Açor’s biodiversity also makes it attractive to nature lovers who want to spot rare plants and animals. The rock in the Serra do Açor consists mainly of Xisto rock, called slate.

Serra da Estrela:

The highest mountain range in Portugal, famous for its snow in winter, cheese production (Queijo da Serra) and spectacular views. This is the place for adventurous travelers who enjoy winter sports and challenging hikes. In summer, the mountain meadows provide a beautiful setting for picnics and quiet walks. In addition, you can visit the Torre, the highest point in mainland Portugal, for panoramic views you won’t soon forget. Also be sure to visit the Black Madonna on the other side, the glacial valley, of the Torre, towards Colvilha.

Visit to Coimbra

Less than an hour’s drive from Arganil is Coimbra, the former capital of Portugal and a city rich in culture and history. Highlights include the famous University of Coimbra (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the botanical garden and the historic district. Coimbra offers a perfect combination of urban charm and historical attractions.

University City and Culture

Coimbra is proud of its ancient university, one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1290. Its magnificent Baroque library building, the Biblioteca Joanina, is one of its most impressive sights. Here you can admire rare books in an enchanting setting. The university square, known as the Paço das Escolas, offers panoramic views of the city and the Mondego River. An entrance ticket is required to visit the library, chapel and tower. Buy these in advance to avoid a long wait.

Historic District and Fado

In Coimbra’s historic district, you’ll find narrow streets that take you back to a rich past. Visit the Sé Velha (old cathedral), an impressive Romanesque building, and walk to the Sé Nova (new cathedral), an elegant example of Baroque architecture. Coimbra is also known for its own style of Fado music, Fado de Coimbra, sung by students and former students of the university. This music reflects the melancholy and romance of the city.

Family Friendly Activities

For families, Coimbra is an excellent destination. The Portugal dos Pequenitos Park is a favorite with children and adults alike. Here you can admire miniatures of famous Portuguese monuments and traditional houses from the former colonies. In addition, the university’s botanical garden offers a peaceful place to relax, with exotic plants and shaded walkways.
