Piódão ……. In the surroundings of our B & B with brown signposts to this tourist attraction.
Spend a day in the mountains by, at the highest point of Portugal. Torre is the highest point (1993 m) of the Serra da Estrela and also from Mainland Portugal. Torre is not a striking mountain peak, but the flattened highest point of a ridge. Exactly at the highest point of the Torre is a geodesic signal. Torre is unusual for a mountain peak, easily accessible via a paved road. It’s wonderful hiking and biking, but in winter also a popular ski area. There are far in spring beautiful mountain lakes with meltwater and there is also Lagoa Comprida, to find a large reservoir. The rivers Alva, Zêzere and Mondego rise in the Serra da Estrela.
Bring on the way to visiting Piódão 224 inhabitants (2001) in the Serra do Açor. Almost all the houses are built of slate, which is unique in this region of Portugal. Piódão is a historic place of interest since 1994, Aldeia Histórica. Do not forget a delicious liqueur, such as buying the chestnut liqueur in this particular village. Curious see more pictures here. You can also cool off in one of the many larger or smaller waterfalls that the area is rich, such as Poco da Broca 20-minute drive from Casa Traca.
Of course you can also closer to ‘home’ search: Arganil and Tabua. Arganil is a reasonable sized town where mostly is much to do in the summer months, but also in the low season is lovely to sit on one of the terraces or in the park. During the summer months there are often festivals in both places and other activities. Tabua is a 25 minute drive along cozy authentic Portuguese villages. Take a turn and just follow the road that turns in.
